Image ideas for my magazine.

Production Diary: Week 6

This week in media, our task was to think of as many possible names for our magazine as we could. Using our knowledge of maagzine name types, we were able to come up with names that were not only entirely original, but ones that were connonative, phrases, compounds and acronyms. By following the definitions of these four types of name, we could create names that if used in real life, would entice the audience and genuinely make them believe that this was a magazine worth reading. Below are the definitions of the four types of name. Acronyms – These are letters that stand for a certain group of words. They are short, effective and are instrumental in a magazine becoming well known by people. Not many people know what these acronyms stand for, but that isn’t really a problem. An example of an acronym name is NME which stands fow “New music express”. Phrase – Phrases are popular and are usually used to give a certain feel or sense of mood to a magazine. Some of them can be used to relate to the genre i.e. – Top of the Pops. An example of a phrase name used to display a mood is “Drowned in sound”. Connotative – When looking at connotative names, we can simply think of connotations of certain things. For example red for passion or love. When they are used in magazine names, they cover what music involves or represents. For example “Vibe” can be used to represent the feeling that individuals get when they listen to music. Compound – Also known as “Play on words”, these names are usually a mix of two words or just simply incorporate a word within a phrase. For example – “Indie-pendent”. A lot of these compound names have some sort of relation to the genre itself, like “Indie-pendent” As you already know, the name for my magazine will be "Indie-vidual", which is a compound (Play on words) name. However, I did have other potential names: I was first of all considering to use the acronym,"I.E" which stands for "Indie Express". In addition, I was also considering to use the name "Alternate", which relates to the genre of music (Indie and Alternative)

Production Diary Week 5:

This week in media, we have been taking our final steps towards the start of our magazine creation. So far, we have analysed contents pages, double page spreads and front covers of magazines in order to gain a real understanding and level of respect for how certain things work in magazines. This week, our task was to analyse the names of different magazines to comment on how effective they are in different fields. In lesson, we learnt of four different types of names for magazines, including acronyms. This task will help us gain a real knowledge of the way that names of magazines are affective and how they can relate to the target audience that they are selling to. Having done this task, I have decided that the final name for my magazine will be "Indie-Vidual". This is not only clever, but relates perfectly to the genre and the audience. The genre is obviously Indie, but the "Vidual" part is what makes it unique and clever. As many fans of Indie/Alternative music are individualists, they feel that they want to be differnt from everyone else. In context, Indie is a genre which started off as an almost "Nieche market" type of music. This means that the songs written, artists and even the music videos associated with Indie music were unique. This leads to the name "Indie-Vidual".

Production Diary Week 4:

This week in Media Studies, we have been doing a little more work on our background information for our magazine. Mr Fisher set us the task of creating a mood board, in which we take pictures of artists, iconic albums and other things related to our specific genre. For me, doing indie music was a good choice. This is because im a fan off all different indie bands such as Bastille and Two Door Cinema club. The task itself was simple, but there is a lot of thinking that will go on afterwards. For example, how I could incorporate these different bands and artists into my magzine an other articles that I may write up. The mood board has inspired me to use as much terminology and band names related to Indie music as possible. This will also give me ideas for features such as small reviews or perhaps a write up on what I and other people think about a certain album or song. Here is my mood board if you haven't already seen it: Here is a brief explanation of why I have chosen those specific artists. To start, all of the artists that are on the mood board are ones that I am a huge fan of! I do like many more, but they are my main favourites. As you have probably already seen, I posted a link of a song that Bastille sung. All of these bands have had a huge influence on what genre my magazine was going to be, the band featuring it and the whole feel of the magazine. Before the task of creating a magazine was given, I knew that Indie/Alternative was going to be my genre. The skill, talent and purity of the genre is something that not only makes it enjoyable, but special in so many ways. I hope you enjoyed reading this week. Read next week's diary for another close up of what I am doing with my work!
